The term in-between refers to a number of ideas found in the work included in this exhibition; it makes reference to the fact that much of this work sits on the fringe of what may be considered ‘painting’. The work includes aspects of sculpture, drawing, and construction and thus can be considered something ‘in-between’ painting and these other areas.

In-between also refers to the space these paintings occupy. Some of the works have holes physically present in their surfaces, others are shiny and impenetrable. The holes lead the viewer to an unknown space that sits between the surface of the painting and the wall; while the impenetrable surfaces position the viewer between the painting and the light source--drawing attention to the physical/exterior surroundings in which the painting is viewed.

Lastly, much of this work is derived from the act of sitting and looking—while in-between the more significant events of daily life. It is during these moments that we tend to notice architectural nuances and details such as cracked plaster ceilings, poorly patched/ yet-to-be patched walls, or how light is cast into the room. The work featured in this exhibition is directly sourced from these types of in-between experiences and the associations they give rise to.
